Jambi (Antara Jambi) - The Jambi Provincial Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) said the flood alert in the Jambi provincial capital has been raised to the third level following high rainfall causing the overflowing of a river in the city.

"The water level of Batanghari River was recorded at 14 meters," Head of the Jambi BPBD Zubaidi AR said here on Sunday.

The incessant rains which fell in most parts of Jambi had caused the water level of Batanghari River to rise to 9 meters which is above the normal level, he said.

"There were more than 1,100 houses inundated on Saturday (Feb 16). Flood water also affected a number of public facilities such as school buildings," Zubaidi said.

Two persons of Muarojambi and Batanghari Districts were reported dead due to the flood.

Moreover, at least 2,000 houses were inundated in Muarojambi District, the closest area to Jambi. The flood had also cut off land communication from Jambi to the eastern district of Tanjung Jabung Timur.

Flood water is inundating a number of sub-districts in Jambi, such as Jambi Timur, especially in Payo Selincah and Sijenjang Villages where hundreds of houses and one public health center are affected.

As many as 722 houses and two elementary school buildings in Telanaipura Sub-district are also inundated.

Jambi was affected by flood from the end of 2012 to early 2013.

A number of severe floods were reported to affect such districts as Kerinci, Bungo, Merangin, Sarolangun, Batanghari, Jambi, and Muarojambi.

The high rainfalls had also triggered landslides, leaving five persons dead in Kerinci District in January.(Ant)
