Jambi, June 10 (Antara) - The World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) Indonesia said the condition of peat land in the protected forests in Londerang , Jambi, is critical.Water canal has to be built in that forest to recover the condition of the peat land, Manager of Science Conservation Unit of WWF Indonesia, Thomas Borano, said here on Saturday.

Thomas said around 90 percent of 12,600 hectares of protected peat forest in Londerang are in critical condition .
"Forest fires in 2015 and almost every year before, caused the destruction of peat forests in Londerang," Thomas told reporters here.

In a bid to recover the condition of the peat forest, the WWF through the program of MCA-Indonesia corridor has prepared 70 canals in the Londerang protected forest along the border area in the regencies of Muarojambi and Tanjungjabung Timur, Jambi.

The WWF with the support of MCAI built 70 water canals including 10 unit larger than 6 meters amd 60 units in smaller size of less than 6 meters wide.

The WWF also seeks restoration by planting trees including fruit trees over 250 hectares of forest land in that area.
The restoration program in that area is carried out in cooperation with the local people trained to build water canals in line with the concept of the Peat Restoration Agency (BRG) to wet that dried land.

"The canal will at least could wet the peat to help prevent forest fires," Thomas said.

Big fires hit Sumatra and Kalimantan in 2015 destroying wide forests and peat lands. Big fires had been disastrous almost every year until 2015 sending haze of black smokes across the borders to Malaysia and Singapore.
