Jambi (ANTARA Jambi) - Flooding has hit wide areas in the country over the past month inundating houses and damaging food crops.
In seven sub-districts of the regency of Batanghari of Jambi, flood waters forced temporary closure of at least 35 schools.
Some students resumed study at other schools and some have to stop schooling until the condition is normal again.
For the last two weeks flooding has hit the seven sub-districts with the Batanghari river overflowing its banks inundating thousands of houses and public buildings including schools.
Landslides blocked road and bridges were smashed and washed away downstream paralyzing transport.
Head of the Batanghari district education and culture service Hadramin Nida said 39 elementary and high schools had to be closed for the safety of the school children.
Schools are closed either because they are still inundated by flood waters or as the schools are being isolated by floods with all roads to schools submerged under flood water, Hadramin said.
"Students facing national examination are moved to schools in other villages to allow them to continue study," he said.
The district education and culture service is considering the setting up of makeshift buildings for students preparing for national examinations, he said.(Ant)
