Jakarta (ANTARAJambi) - The Supreme Court on Thursday sentenced Democratic Party politician Angelina Sondakh to 12 years imprisonment for her involvement in corruption at two ministries, namely the Ministry of Culture and Education and the Ministry of Youth and Sports.
The sentence was heavier than earlier judgments delivered in by the Jakarta high court, which was a four and a half years jail sentence.
"The defendant is an active executor in this case. Hence, we charge her with an additional sentence based on Anti-Corruption Regulation Number 12 a," Artidjo Alkostar, the Chairman of the Judges panel, stated on Thursday.
He attributed the decision to charge the former Miss Indonesia with an additional sentence to her active role in the corruption case. Artidjo pointed out that it had been proved that Angelina was the one demanding a seven percent fee from Permai Group's representative Mindo Rosalina in exchange for allowing them to handle certain projects at the two ministries.
Angelina, who won the 2001 Puteri Indonesia beauty pageant, is said to have received more than Rp12 billion or US $350,000 from Mindo Rosalina.
During Thursday's verdict, the judge also directed Angelina to pay Rp12.58 billion and US$2.3 million received in bribe money to the state, saying that if she failed to pay the fine, an additional five years in jail will be added to her current sentence.
